Background Hepatitis D Virus (HDV)-infection is associated with a more severe outcome in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB); however, little is known about the presence of HDV in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to determine the prevalence of HDV-infection, as well as its clinical, biological and virological characteristics, in a large CHB cohort in Ethiopia. Methods In total, 1267 HIV-negative CHB patients at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa were screened for anti-HDV antibodies using ELISA assays. To evaluate a possible variation in hepatitis D virus endemicity in Italy, the data from a multicentre study concerning HBsAg chronic carriers first observed in 31 liver units during 1992 were compared with the corresponding figures from a similar study performed in 1987.In both studies the methodology for the recruitment of cases was the same. The overall anti-HD prevalence in 1992 was 14.4%, a significantly lower rate than that observed in 1987 (23.4%, p0.01). The hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection plays a major role in severe liver damage caused by hepatitis. To establish the prevalence of HDV infection in haemophilic patients and patients without haemophilia, 87 patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection were examined for serological evidence of delta hepatitis. Expression of Pre-S-Encoded Proteins in Sera of Individuals Chronically Infected with Hepatitis D Virus

The sera of 16 individuals chronically infected with the hepatitis D virus were analyzed for hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers. The majority of these patients had a non-replicative form of viral type B hepatitis as indicated by negative tests for HBeAg and HBV-DNA. Pre-S-encoded proteins were detected in 13/16 sera. Sera that were negative for polymerized serum albumin did also not contain pre-S1-encoded proteins. The presence of pre-S-encoded proteins is probably predominantly associated with 22-nm HBsAg forms present in large amounts in sera of individuals with chronic type D hepatitis.
